abstract

abstract background: esophageal anastomosis leaks continue to be a significant cause of morbidity and mortality after esophagectomy. the purpose of the present study was to identify the predisposing factors of esophageal anastomotic leakage. materials and methods: 95 patients who underwent surgical resection for esophageal or cardia cancer were included for the study. the mean age of the patients was 59.5 years and male to female ratio was 1.56 to 1. the preferred management strategy for anastomotic leakage was the conservative approach when possible. the operative approach was reserved for those patients with fulminant sepsis or those who did not respond to the conservative management. data were analyzed using spss 13.0 software and p-values less than 0.05 were considered significant. results: sixty six patients had cervical esophageal anastomosis and 29 had intrathoracic anastomosis; 18.9% anastomotic leakage was diagnosed. patients with symptoms longer than 6 months prior to operation, and diabetic patients had a significantly higher risk of anastomotic leakage. conclusion: our data showed that the presences of diabetes mellitus as well as prolonged symptoms (more than six months) are associated with higher anastomotic leakage after esophagectomy. controlling blood glucose, early diagnosis of esophageal cancer, early resection of tumor before a long-term period of symptoms, and effective screening program for esophageal cancer may reduce the risk of esophageal leakage.

Risk Factors for Anastomotic Leakage after Laparoscopic Rectal Resection

PURPOSE The anastomotic leakage rate after rectal resection has been reported to be approximately 2.5-21 percent, but most results were associated with open surgery. The aim of this study was to identify risk factors and their relationship to the experience of the surgeon for anastomotic leakage after laparoscopic rectal resection. METHODS Between March 2003 and December 2008, 156 patients un...

Predicting the risk and diminishing the consequences of anastomotic leakage after anterior resection for rectal cancer.

INTRODUCTION Anastomotic leakage is one of the most serious early complications of any intestinal anastomosis. The morbidity and mortality are high and patients may be at increased risk of cancer recurrence. In colorectal surgery the risks are particularly high following low anterior resection. Factors which increase and decrease the risks are discussed. METHODS A review of the main published...

[Risk factors for anastomotic leakage after anterior resection for rectal cancer].

OBJECTIVE To identify the risk factors associated with anastomotic leakage following an anterior resection for rectal cancer. METHODS Between June, 1999 and June, 2009, 628 patients underwent anterior resection for rectal cancer. A retrospective study of the cases was performed to identify the risk factors for anastomotic leakage following the resection. RESULTS The overall incidence rate o...

Prognostic Value of C - reactive Protein and Procalcitonin Levels in Predicting Anastomotic Leakage after Colorectal Resection in Mazandaran Province

Background and purpose: Colorectal resection is used for various diseases and leakage in an anastomosis is one of its complications. Some studies confirmed the predictive effects of C-reactive protein (CRP) and procalcitonin markers leakage in anastomosis. This study aimed to investigate the prognostic value of CRP and procalcitonin in predicting anastomotic leakage in elective colorectal surge...

The Risk Factors of Anastomotic Leakage and Influence of Fecal Diversion after Resection of Rectal Cancer

ing rectal resection with anastomosis is symptomatic anastomotic leakage, especially after resection of middle and low rectal cancers. Anastomotic leakage is also a major cause of postoperative morbidity and mortality in patients with rectal cancer undergoing sphincter preservation surgery. Leakage rates from 2.8% to more than 15% have been reported by several investigators. Many factors may be...

Smoking and tumor obstruction are risk factors for anastomotic leakage after laparoscopic anterior resection during rectal cancer treatment

Objectives: To clarify the surgical outcomes and risk factors for anastomotic leakage (AL) following laparoscopic anterior resection (Lap-AR) for the treatment of rectal cancer. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the records of 175 consecutive primary rectal cancer patients who had undergone Lap-AR at our institution between April 2012 and November 2015. Patient, tumor, and surgical variables...
